A Jamaican Canadian designer, artist, and illustrator, Devere began in Industrial Design but quickly discovered his creativity stretched far beyond that field. He loves designing characters, illustrating portraits, and imagining how ideas can grow across different forms. "I’ve always been curious about how and why things are the way they are," he says. "Through art and design I can explore those questions and share my ideas with others."
Devere's style falls between fantastical realism and cartooning. Much of his personal work leans toward children’s illustration, where storytelling and imagination meet. His influences include Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball with its playful worlds, and Neville Page’s creature designs that balance functional anatomy with elegance. "What they both share is a strong sense of design that serves the story and great draftsmanship," he explains.
Although trained in Industrial Design, Devere was drawn to animation long before his studies. The work of designers like Scott Robertson and Neville Page showed him how illustration and design could thrive in entertainment. That realization inspired a bigger dream: to one day create a studio where product design, architecture, illustration, and animation all intersect. Written down two decades ago, it remains close to his heart.
Devere finds his greatest joy in the earliest stage of the creative process: ideation. "I love taking all the inspiration I've gathered and sketching out the possibilities," he says. "That’s when ideas begin to take shape and anything feels possible." Like many artists, he encounters creative blocks, but he overcomes them by reminding himself that every success has come through learning something new. This keeps his approach open and resilient.
Devere's creativity shows up in many ways. He enjoys anime, chess, building projects, cooking, baking, and staying active. He has also written two children's books—Imagination Has No Limitations and Dogs Aren’t So Scary—both designed to spark curiosity and encourage young readers. Dogs Aren’t So Scary, inspired by his daughter Lheandra, helps children overcome their fear of dogs, while Imagination Has No Limitations celebrates the power of creativity and exploration.
When we are reminded of how fulfilling creativity truly is, it becomes an invitation. With school back in session, this is the perfect time to explore fresh ideas, and let curiosity guide you.
